LEME

LEME´S name comes from the rocks that surround the beach, the well known Pedra do Leme. If we take a look up, we will notice that the rock looks like the helm (leme) of a ship. The design of sidewalk along the shore was created in the 70’s by the landscapist Burle Marx, he accurately reproduced the sea waves with black and white portuguese stones. Accommodations>>
People that live in Leme are mainly middle and upper middle class citizens. However, there are two communities, located in two different morros called Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira. Their residents are mostly working class people and expats. Both communities were pacified in June, 2009, when the UPP (Pacifying Police Units) set foot in those places and started working together with the population. By means of its particular location, 200 mts away from the beach and very close to the Sugarloaf, Leme has an enormous touristic potential. The trilha up the hill is a magnificent path with an amazing view of the city and the beach. See more about the beach>>
FOOD & DRINK
Leme beach is not the most popular beach in Rio. That is why it is mostly frequented by the neighbours. The sea is really calm and quiet, since the Leme rock acts as a breakwater, preventing huge waves from crashing into the shore. It is also perfect to fish, fishemen use the Leme viewpoit to practice their beloved sport, with an outstanding sightseeing of the Leme and Copacabana beaches and a fully equipped quiosque ready to serve the local public.
There are volleyball nets and a bicycle path where people practice sports, run, or skate. The final point in the beach is the Morro do Leme that hosts the Forte Duque de Caxias, which is a military fort. In Leme there are also other military buildings, such as the Forte da Ponta da Vigia, the Forte da Ponta do anel, and the Forte Guanabara. Very interesting poits to get to know a bit more about brazilian history.
